Frequently asked questions.
What does my first session look like, what should I expect?
In the first therapy session, it is done virtually through video chat, and the therapist collects information about you and your needs. You may need to fill out forms regarding your physical and emotional health. It can take a few sessions for the therapist to fully understand your situation and decide on the best approach.
This session also lets you get to know your therapist and see if their style works for you. Make sure to ask about the type of therapy, treatment goals, session length, and the number of sessions you might need.
Feel free to ask questions during your appointment. If you don't feel comfortable with the therapist, it's okay to find someone else. A good match with your therapist is key for successful treatment.
What do sessions look like?
Each session will be tailored to your goals and may include activities such as observing horses, grooming, leading a horse, or navigating obstacle courses. Your therapist will provide guidance, asking questions about your observations and supporting you in exploring any feelings or insights that arise.
Is this covered by OHIP or my insurance?
Psychotherapy services outside of hospitals or public agencies are generally not covered by OHIP, but are accepted by most major insurance providers. At Heart Horse Counselling, we strive to provide accessible support for adults and teenagers through equine-assisted psychotherapy. While insurance coverage may vary, our focus remains on offering compassionate care tailored to your needs. If you have questions about fees or potential coverage, please reach out—we're here to help!
What do I wear to my session?
Always dress appropriately for the weather conditions, taking into account how they might change throughout the day. Additionally, ensure that the clothes you choose to wear are suitable for being around livestock animals, providing both comfort and safety while you engage in activities involving them.
What happens if I miss my session?
If you happen to miss your scheduled session, please be aware that there will be a charge of $50 incurred for the missed appointment. Consequently, if you find that you need to reschedule your session for any reason, we kindly ask you to reach out and contact us as soon as possible to avoid any charges as insurance companies do not reimburse for these fees.
Your well-being is important to us, and we want to ensure that you receive the support you need.
