Not Just for Kids: Why Adults Are Adding the Pasture to the Therapy Couch For Their Mental Health
When you hear "Equine Therapy," what image pops into your head?
Maybe it’s a shy child gaining confidence on a pony, or a teenager learning responsibility. While those are beautiful parts of what we do, there is a huge misconception that Heart Horse Counselling is "just for kids."
Here is the truth: Adults often need the herd more than anyone.
As adults, we become masters at "talking the talk." We know how to rationalize our stress, intellectualize our trauma, and mask our burnout. We can sit on a therapy couch for an hour, say all the "right" things, and leave feeling just as disconnected as when we walked in.
If you have ever felt stuck in traditional talk therapy, or if the idea of sitting in a windowless office makes you want to run the other way, it might be time to step into the pasture.
The Perfect Partner to Talk Therapy: Your Circle of Care
One of the biggest questions we get is: "Do I have to quit my current therapist to come here?"
Absolutely not. In fact, equine therapy is often the "secret sauce" that makes talk therapy more effective.
Think of your mental health support as a Circle of Care. We are not here to compete with your primary talk therapist; we are here to collaborate with them.
The "Unsticking" Point: Have you hit a plateau in talk therapy where you understand why you are anxious, but you still feel anxious? That is where we come in. You can process the narrative with your talk therapist, and then come to the barn to practice the somatic regulation—wiring that safety into your body.
A Collaborative Team: As a Registered Psychotherapist, I speak the same clinical language as your primary care provider. With your consent, I can collaborate with your psychologist, social worker, or GP to ensure our barn sessions align with your broader treatment goals.
Intensive Adjunct Work: Some clients see their regular therapist weekly and come to the barn once a month for a "deep dive" experiential session to recharge and gain new insights.
It is not an "either/or" choice. It is a powerful "and."
Why the Barn Works When the Office Doesn't
Traditional therapy is often "top-down"—we use our brains to try to fix our feelings. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is experiential. It is "bottom-up." We use the body and the environment to shift the brain.
Here is why adults are finding profound breakthroughs with us:
1. You Can’t "Spin" a Horse 🐴
In an office, you can tell your therapist you’re "fine" while your heart is racing. A horse doesn’t listen to your words; they listen to your nervous system. If you are anxious, they might act restlessly. If you are checking out (dissociating), they might walk away. They are 1,000-pound biofeedback machines that force you to get honest with yourself instantly.
2. Movement vs. Stagnation 🚶♀️
Trauma and stress live in the body. Sitting still in a chair often keeps that energy stuck. At the barn, we are moving. We are grooming, walking, and breathing fresh air. This physical engagement lowers cortisol (stress hormones) and allows you to process heavy emotions without having to stare directly at them.
Who is Adult Equine Therapy For?
You don't need to be a "horse person." You don't even need to like nature. You just need to be open to a different way of healing. We work with adults navigating:
High-Functioning Anxiety & Burnout: For the professionals who carry the weight of the world and need a place to just be.
Relationship Issues: Learning to trust and connect again.
Trauma & PTSD: finding safety in the body when words fail.
Life Transitions: Divorce, career changes, or empty nesting.
No Saddle Required
A common fear adults have is, "But I don't know how to ride!"
Good news: We don't ride in these sessions. All our work is done on the ground. This is about connection, psychology, and nervous system regulation—not equestrian skill. You don't need boots, breeches, or bravery. Just come as you are (maybe with shoes you don't mind getting a little dusty).
